Gloucestershire Outdoor Group is a social walking group which offers walks, weekends away, and a wide range of other outdoor activities. Our members are singles and couples and people who like to be part of and contribute to a social group. Regular members are expected to offer events on the programme for all to enjoy and we have a planning evening once every three months.

Our programme of events are organised to fit around working commitments.  Events include  Thursday walks, Sunday walks and weekends  to Youth Hostels, cottages, bunkhouses and even camping in the Summer months.  We have also been known to venture off on walking trips to Europe, organised by group members.

We do not usually organise events within work hours from Monday to Friday but sometime walk on Saturdays to help those who cannot do Sundays.

The group was started in 1952.

  • Long distance paths -

We are continuing to walk the Gloucestershire Way which takes a wonderful, meandering route around Gloucestershire. Be amazed by hidden pockets of the county you didn't know existed

The Beacons Way will be a new challenge for the group starting in 2018, starting with day walk, but quickly moving onto weekends away, the first of which will be later this year. The route crosses the Beacons from Abergavenney right the way across to the far side of the nationl park. The route climbs several peaks, including Pen y Fan, descends into deep valleys and heads across expansive areas of moorland

  • Sunday Walks

There is a full programme of Sunday walks which are generally 8 to 10 miles. The walk leaders have chosen a wide variety of routes around Gloucestershire and further afield.  Bring sandwiches and drinks as well as usual walking kit

  • Weekends away

These are a great opportunity to meet other people and enjoy walking in different parts of the country.   This year we will also met up for Sunday walks with Newport Outdoor group and Reading Outdoor Group. Upcoming weekends away are to  a wide variety of places around Britain such as here we stay in a wide range of accommodation from bunkhouses to luxury cottages.

2017 saw a record number of weekends away for the group, and 2018 looks like it will go the same way. Up and coming weekends include a Bank Holiday camping trip to Wales, a bank holiday weekend in a bunkhouse in the Chilterns, and further ahead, a camping trip to High Cup in the North Penninines.

  • Thursday evening walks

Starting after work, these walks begin just after Easter.  These are popular with members, being around 4 miles in length often finishing with a drink in a local pub.

  • Social events - cinema, films, meals out, night walks, theatre trips, pancake flipping, bar billiards and more!
  • Outdoor events - archery, map reading and navigation, horse riding, camping.
